Playland at the Conservatory
Friday, November 18 – Sunday, April 15 from 10AM-4PM
Conservatory of Flowers, 100 J F Kennedy Drive, San Francisco…Price: $7 and below
Step right up for a ride back in time as the Conservatory of Flowers presents an all new garden railway display celebrating the legendary Playland at the Beach and a bygone era of seaside amusement that was located on San Francisco’s West End. In a dazzling display landscaped with hundreds of dwarf plants, model trains and trolleys wend their way past the famed Sutro Baths, zip around a replica of the Victorian-era Cliff House and whiz through a fantastic mini version of San Francisco’s beloved Playland at the Beach. Young and old alike will marvel at the sight of Playland’s most famous attractions in miniature, all in swirling motion and bright with twinkling carnival lights, while the sounds of the arcade and even Laffing Sal’s boisterous voice transport visitors right back to the midway. Wee rollercoaster cars climb the steep tracks of the Big Dipper, Playland’s biggest thrill ride from the 1920s to the 1950s, while a mini Airplane Ride spins and spins in circles. Other attractions include the treacherous Diving Bell, the Fun House and Playland’s famed food arcade where hungry revelers could grab an enchilada at the Hot House or a sweet at the Candy Factory.

Fernando Orellana’s Slideways – Opening Reception
Friday, November 18 from 6-9PM at Satellite66, 66 6th Street, San Francisco
Price: Free
Satellite66 is pleased to present Fernando Orellana’s new series of digital paintings, collectively entitled Slideways. The exhibition is on view from November 18 to December 31, 2011. An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 18, from 6-9pm.
The complex, multi-layered, and often humorous imagery in the series Slideways is produced somewhat automatically. “The initial drawings surface quickly, almost as if they already existed,” Orellana explains, “In many ways, I am just transcribing the images, allowing them to take shape on their own.” To achieve this, Orellana allows his consciousness to be distracted by external influences, which serves to remove deliberate mark-making from the process. Eventually, Orellana “sees” his subjects in the labyrinth of initial lines and embellishes them. The process is thus related to both the occult practices of automatic writing and Freudian ideas of free association. Source: Satellite66.org
